The Georgetown Secondary School is a bigger winner than previously announced.

The school has taken first place in the CARICOM Schools Agriculture Video Competition, following a re-tally and recount.

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, in collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) recently hosted the video competition to give students a chance to showcase the vital role agriculture plays in their community, country, and the region.

Integrated Science and Biology teacher at the Georgetown Secondary school Mackesha Bobb-Peters tells NBC Radio News that as a rural school, the win marks a milestone.

"We were happy with the second, but this is even more victorious for us. All the teamwork, all the hard work that we did has actually paid off and the children are very happy, they are very happy about this new win, and they are as I said in the last time that we spoke, they are even more motivated now and we have children who are not doing agricultural science, they are now asking if they would be able to take that up in the next school year.  And our prize money has also increased so we are even more happy."

Bobb-Peters is encouraging schools not to give up on their agricultural programme, adding that her school started theirs from nothing.

"We got a lot of assistance from a Past Principal Mr. Kenroy Johnson, and we were able to cultivate our school garden. So, we should not be, we should not feel demotivated or should not feel that you cannot do it even if you do not have the resources because we actually did start from nothing. We got seeds donation from farmers, and we also got seeds from the Rural Transformation Unit, and we were able successfully propagate crops."
